Join us for a special evening of storytelling, spoken word, book launches, and award announcements in Yellowknife!
This edition of GATHER features open mic performances from local writers, three incredible Northern authors launching their latest books, and the announcement of the 2023 NorthWords Book Awards winners.
Robyn Scott, NorthWords NWT President, will host the evening, and all are welcome to take part in the open mic, where anyone can share original spoken work for up to five minutes.
FEATURED AUTHORS
- CASSANDRA BLONDIN BURT
Cassandra, a two-spirit Dene artist, philosophy student, and plant medicine maker, debuts their first poetry collection with Armistice Press. Through their poetry, Cassandra explores healing, Indigenous identity, and connection to nature.
- GEORGES ERASMUS
Georges Erasmus, a recognized leader in Indigenous advocacy, presents his memoir, Hòt'a! Enough!. Born in Fort Rae, Erasmus’s book takes readers through key moments like the Berger Inquiry, the Oka Crisis, and the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, sharing stories of Indigenous rights, resilience, and leadership.
- CARLY STARKER
Carly Starker, The Tree Taught Me is a collection of poetry that explores themes of grief, loss healing, and love in all its forms. In addition to performances, book sales and signings will be available on site, thanks to Yellowknife Books. This is a great chance to purchase signed copies and connect with the authors.
Open Mic & How to Join
Whether you’re a regular performer or just giving it a try, our open mic is open to everyone! Sign up at the door for up to five minutes on stage to share anything spoken aloud, like:
- Poems, stories, or novel excerpts
- Personal anecdotes or comedy sketches
- Skits or traditional stories from family
