A Night of Spoken Word, Poetry, Comedy & Shared Stories for Gender Equity

This is a wonderful opportunity for writers, poets, and storytellers to share their work with a captivated audience. Whether you're a seasoned spoken word artist or taking your first steps into literary events, our stage is open to all. Audience members will be surprised by readings from passionate local authors, who will tell stories that make you smile, cry, or think. Come along to listen, be inspired, and perhaps share a piece of your own!

GATHER: Open Mic is your chance to take the microphone for up to 5 minutes and perform anything original that is spoken out loud. For instance, you could read:
• a few poems you’ve penned
• an excerpt from a novel you’re crafting
• an original stand-up comedy routine
• a skit you’ve written and want to perform with friends
• a hilarious true story of a disastrous first date
• a traditional tale shared by your auntie
• or anything else you fancy!

Simply sign up at the door upon arrival. NorthWords NWT will be there to welcome you. Don’t forget to invite your friends to cheer you on!

Don’t have anything to read? No worries! Come and enjoy the talented writers and performers of Yellowknife as they showcase their skills on stage.

Full food and beverage service is available! We’re excited to see you there! Help spread the word by inviting your friends to the Facebook event!

Feature Performers:

Lauren McKeon is the executive editor of non-fiction at HarperCollins Canada. Prior to working in books, she enjoyed a career in magazines where she worked as an editor at Toronto Life, Reader's Digest, The Walrus, and This Magazine. Lauren is an award-winning journalist and her writing has appeared in publications such as Maclean’s, Toronto Life, Chatelaine, and Hazlitt, where she’s tackled an eclectic set of topics, ranging from true crime to deeply personal essays. She is also the author of three non-fiction books, F-Bomb, No More Nice Girls, and Women of the Pandemic, all of which focus on celebrating women, dismantling power structures and examining the world through a not-so-rosy feminist lens. Her next book, a memoir, is forthcoming with McClelland & Stewart.

Gi Debogorski is an indie-folk singer-songwriter from Yellowknife who brings raw emotion into every song, drawing influence from their own personal experience and the wilderness of the North to forge a unique musical style. Whether it’s the flourish they bring when covering existing music, the playful energy of The Moustache Song, or the heartfelt depth of their ballads, Gi’s music draws listeners into an intimate, emotional journey. Over the years, they’ve been an active part of the Yellowknife music scene, regularly participating in jams and collaborating with other artists from the NWT. They have also been a consistent participant at Folk on the Rocks (FOTR), taking part in the Northern Mosaic Network Performing Arts and Queer Justice Camp for several years. At the FOTR 2024 festival, they performed a powerful duo set, which ended with a moving tribute to her late brother that left the audience visibly shaken, with many brought to tears. Gi’s ability to connect so deeply through music is what makes every one of their performances an unforgettable experience.
