From Character to Plot and Back Again
with Giller shortlisted writer Alexander MacLeod, this year a Giller judge.

2PM – 4PM | EXPLORER HOTEL, KATIMAVIK ROOMS

FEE: $30.00 | REGISTER AT THE YELLOWKNIFE BOOK CELLAR

What is the relationship between character and plot in fiction and how can writers learn to work more effectively with these two narrative elements? Do characters ‘drive’ their stories, as some people believe, and should writers spend most of their time and energy on characterization, or should characters be understood as extensions of plot, carefully designed fictional constructs that have been purposely built to advance the particular needs of the story they serve. In this session, we will create narratives that follow both models and, in the process, we will hopefully come to a better understanding of the many ways characterization and plot rely on each other.
